Not so long ago, the South Korean company was an outsider, its reputation in about the same hole that Japanese automakers had to live in in the fifties and sixties: its products were distrusted and dismissed as bad junk.

But it’s 2020 and the Telluride is so popular that Kia can’t make them fast enough to keep up with demand. In my SUV testing, there was a clear reason for this: not only is the Telluride comfortable enough for the whole family, but it also punches well above its weight in terms of value.

The Telluride is Kia’s new midsize SUV that debuted last year as a 2020 model. Thanks to the third row, designed for three passengers, the car can be configured for seven or eight seats. Aside from the Sedona minivan, it’s the largest vehicle Kia currently offers.

Visually, the Telluride is perhaps Kia’s most impressive of the new K5 sedans. With its vertically oriented design and square orange daytime running lights, the Telluride has a face that doesn’t just blend in with the rest of the crowd. It gets your attention.

The rear styling gets a little busy, but the Telluride still doesn’t look like any other SUV on the road. But it certainly does not look like a bin deal.

Mechanically, the Telluride is the Hyundai Palisade’s twin. Both share a common platform, engine and transmission. The big difference is the looks—and the fact that the Palisade’s starting price is a little higher at $32,525.

Only one powertrain is offered on the Telluride: a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 that produces a claimed 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. That’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Telluride has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

You can get the SUV in either front- or all-wheel drive, and curb weights range from about 4,100 pounds to about 4,500 pounds.

Behind the third row, the trunk has a cargo capacity of 21 cubic feet, up from the Honda Pilot’s 18.5 cubic feet. When the third row is folded down, the Telluride’s cargo capacity behind the second row increases to 46 cubic feet, compared to the Pilot’s just over 55.9 cubic feet.

The car received four stars for the overall front crash rating, five stars for the overall side crash rating and four stars for the rollover safety rating. The agency noted that Telluride has a 14.3% rollover risk.

The last time I was at a Kia was in early 2018 and it was a Stinger GT. The car looked great on the outside, but it still had a bit of that thrifty, plastic feel inside.

Sure, Kia gave me the most optioned Telluride it could muster (the top-of-the-line SX AWD with Nappa leather seats), but what the automaker couldn’t choose from was quite a nice touch.

The cabin has a nice wood (or something that looks like wood) finish, all the metals have a brushed aluminum look, and all the buttons and switches are nice and firm to the touch.

Because yes! There are buttons and switches. And dials. Sure, there’s a screen for the infotainment system, but there are buttons for the climate, so you can rely on your muscle memory to change it. It’s great and I hope it never goes away because putting all the controls on a touch screen isn’t for everyone.

There’s also plenty of room to stretch out, even in the third row. The Kia doesn’t suffer from the same disease of simplistic design (see also: pinching) that afflicts cars like the BMW X7 SUV, which despite its massive footprint only seats two in the third row.

The second-row captain’s chairs offer plenty of legroom and the ability to charge your device: USB ports can be conveniently found within reach on the front seatbacks. The floor for the second and third rows is flat and makes it easy to move around the cabin, and the second row folds quickly for easy access to the third row.

Without a doubt, this is a spacious and high-class interior. So it was no surprise to me when I learned that the Telluride made WardsAuto’s 2020 “Top 10 Interiors List.”

Although similar in size to the Lincoln Aviator, the Telluride handles more firmly when driving. There’s less jump in the suspension, less lean when cornering, and overall heavier steering, giving you a little more confidence in where you’re pointing the car’s nose. Visibility through the large windows is excellent.

Highway traffic is smooth and quiet. The engine does what is asked of it, which is a random burst of speed for passing and merging. Otherwise, it begins to hum quietly, and the eight-speed gearbox maintains low revs while driving.

This is not a machine that will blow your hair off with incredible acceleration; but then again, is that what you’re looking for in Telluride?

This car can be driven across the country effortlessly — well, if only the estimated gas mileage was better.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the front Telluride will return 20 mpg in the city, 26 on the highway and 23 mpg combined. The AWD Telluride is rated at 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined.

Compared to the non-hybrid models of the Toyota Highlander, those ratings are pretty much the same, but the Highlander also comes as a hybrid. Telluride does not. This was one of those times I wished I had a turbocharged four-cylinder or a hybrid option in addition to the naturally aspirated V6.

But! Grades are grades for a reason. In the days I owned the car, the trip meter said I was getting an average of 27.4 mpg.

Kia has thoughtfully provided a lane change assist system in the form of rearview cameras that look down the length of the car. They are activated by turning on the turn signal.

This is a useful feature, but somewhat distracting as the image is superimposed on the driver’s instrument panel. You shouldn’t be looking down so much when you’re about to turn or change lanes, you should be looking out the windows upwards. The image below encourages you to take your eyes off the road.

With a starting price of $31,990, the Telluride gives you a lot of car for the money. many. And it’s cheaper than most of the competition.
