The best of the VW Touareg R feels neither like a sporty SUV nor like a relaxed, refined plug-in like the BMW X5 45e. The X5 offers more range and better efficiency, more refinement and comfort at a more affordable price. The Touareg R is something of a compromise; the technology is great and it will be cheaper to drive than an ICE SUV, but it is expensive and you will have to work to see the benefits in comfort, refinement, performance or engagement.

Large performance SUVs do not send the message of efficiency. Despite the R logo adorning the rear door of this new range-topping Volkswagen Touareg, the German brand takes a different approach to its large performance SUV.

It also includes electrification to increase driver comfort without compromising efficiency – or so the theory goes. So, this £71,995 Touareg R uses a 335bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine with a 14.3kWh battery to feed a 134bhp electric motor for a total of 456bhp and 700Nm of torque. That translates to 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds, which is impressive given the R’s size and weight.

However, this top-of-the-range Touareg doesn’t feel sporty – and that’s because of the weight added by the hybrid system. It slows down his response. The chassis sometimes struggles to keep up with your needs; it never feels underpowered, even through corners without too much lean.

The 4MOTION all-wheel drive system can send up to 80 percent of its drive to the rear axle, but it never feels like the rear axle is involved on the road, yet it feels no advantage when it comes to handling. A good calibration is expected to differentiate this type of system. But then, considering the size and weight, such tricks are not many in the Touareg R.

It drives well in mid-rev boxes, using the electric motor’s torque to support the smooth V6 engine. It means the R feels less rushed and more relaxed, running with a less audible electric keyboard that helps boost refinement.

The powertrain’s versatility means it switches seamlessly between electric and hybrid drivetrain for a claimed efficiency of 94.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 67g/km, meaning the R qualifies for a company car tax rate of 17 per cent.

Rivals such as the BMW X5 xDrive45e offer a larger battery with a more usable electric range, although VW’s plug-in offers cost savings compared to a similarly sized petrol or diesel SUV, with a reduced powertrain. – which means the R’s mixed ride quality is a little disappointing.

Large 22in alloys are standard with air suspension, but even with the latter you’ll notice the former, especially over potholes or bad side bumps. Weight also has an effect here, with the added weight of the battery requiring more suspension adjustments. There’s plenty of stability and smoothness in the smoothest setting, but bumps in corners with a loaded car cause inconsistent response.

Again, this Touareg is better for a more comfortable ride, but that belies its R status. of 4×4 sports.

But the Touareg R is not without its merits. The large 15-inch central touchscreen works well, as does the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The quality is high, but the design is not below what we expect at this price.

Tech is good though, with navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, heated and ventilated leather sport seats, keyless entry, sunroof, 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, climate control four-zone air conditioning, many safety technologies and a powerful tail – behind that price there is a lot of kit.

The Australian launch of the Volkswagen Touareg R plug-in has been delayed by up to 12 months, to coincide with a planned mid-life facelift due in early 2024.

The Touareg R – Volkswagen’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in Australia – was originally scheduled to launch in late 2022 before being pushed back to mid-2023.
